Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants in Rotterdam

Backyard

BACKYARD is an easy-going plant-based restaurant in Rotterdam where sustainability is second nature and the food pops with flavour. For vegans (and non-vegans) who crave some healthy comfort food, this place is just the ticket.

The space suits every mood. You can plug in your laptop, meet friends for a chat, or sink into a sofa and zone out for a while. The interiors mix upcycled materials with creative details. Check out the corrugated walls, hanging planters, and a Banksy-inspired quote painted on chipboard: “I remember when all this was trees” , with a sculpted wooden tree unfurling up to the mezzanine, tying it all together.

The fully vegan menu runs from brunch to cocktails. I went for the signature Backyard Burger made with black beans, and their “Healthy Kapsalon”, a clever twist on the Dutch favourite. The loaded fries, spiced shawarma, fresh veggies, and a drizzle of sriracha mayo is feel-good food done right. Let’s not forget the cauliflower wings. Trust me, these crispy, tangy bites are nothing short of addictive.

Restaurant Rotonde

This innovative restaurant and wine bar in Rotterdam puts local produce from land and sea in the spotlight, creating dishes that honour each ingredient’s natural character. The menu evolves with the seasons and what’s freshly available, guided by their simple motto: keep it pure, keep it exciting. This philosophy has earned them both a Bib Gourmand and a Michelin Green Star.

Owned by a Dutch trio, sustainability runs through everything they do at Restaurant Rotonde. The team collects fresh produce in an electric van and makes sure every part of it is used ensuring little goes to waste. All wines are biodynamic or natural, perfectly paired with the food’s clean yet complex flavours. The menu is entirely vegetarian, with half of it vegan, and their superlative tasting dishes feature yakitori-style mushrooms, charred onions with roasted hazelnut sauce, or palm cabbage paired with pumpkin, seaweed, and buckwheat.

The space itself is warm and gezellig without trying too hard. Grab a seat by the open kitchen to watch the chefs at work over the wood-fired barbecue, where much of the menu is created. And if you’re feeling inspired after your meal, you can even try their recipes at home. This is Rotonde’s way of keeping the sustainable food movement alive and kicking, beyond their restaurant walls.

Nori | Vegan Sushi – Wok

Who says sushi needs fish? NORI reinvents Japanese classics with fully plant-based ingredients. Sushi lovers can’t fail to fall in love with their maki rolls packed with avocado, tofu, vegan crab and crunchy vegetables, plus the colourful poke bowls and wok dishes look pretty enticing too.

NORI is owned by a Buddhist family who take their craft seriously. The father, with over 30 years of culinary experience, oversees the kitchen and prepares the wok dishes, while the middle son has become the resident sushi expert, known for his precision and artistry.

Their focus on quality is uncompromising. Even something as simple as an avocado gets star treatment. The team tests different suppliers to source the perfect ripeness, ensuring every bite hits the mark. One taste, and you’ll see why NORI is a firm favourite for plant-based food in Rotterdam.

Sue Food

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, SUE proves that indulgence doesn’t have to come with guilt. Their treats are vegan, gluten-free, and free from refined sugar — though you’d never guess it from the taste. What began as founder Kim Sue Palm’s home experiment soon grew into a thriving business, as her creations started selling out in local restaurants and bars. With demand rising, she made SUE her full-time venture, and now runs cafés in two Rotterdam locations and another in Amsterdam alongside her partner.

Everything at SUE is made with organic and local ingredients wherever possible, with tea from Theemaas and coffee from Man Met Bril. Stop by for 100% plant-based breakfast stroopwaffel pancakes or a generous lunch platter, but don’t skip dessert. Choosing just one “sweet without sugar” treat is a real challenge with moist banana bread, crunch rocky road and signature handmade square bites on the menu.

Crave Coffee & Bakery

Tucked away in MAHO Kwartier, Crave Coffee & Bakery is the vegan café you didn’t know you needed. It may be small, but big things are happening inside, from purely plant-based cakes and pastries to excellent coffee brewed with beans from local roasters Giraffe Coffee and A Matter of Concrete. Owner Yunlai Ye (of The Tea Lab and BACKYARD) is on a mission to make sustainable, plant-based food the everyday choice.

I tried the Kimcheez Roll — a savoury pastry stuffed with vegan kimchi and gooey plant-based cheese — a clever East-meets-West creation that absolutely works. The glocal flair continues with treats like Chocolate Babka, Burnt Basque Cheesecake, and Almond Chai Cake. If you’re after a conscious café in Rotterdam, Crave hits the sweet spot with friendly service and homemade bakes that feel like a warm hug.

55 Bombay Street

Walk into Rotterdam’s iconic Markthal and your eyes instantly shoot upward. The massive horseshoe-shaped ceiling explodes with colour — Cornucopia, a mural by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, paints giant fruits, vegetables, and flowers across the arch in spectacular detail. It’s mesmerising, but don’t get too distracted. The real action happens ground level, where independent food stalls tempt you with aromas and flavours from around the world.

If you like a bit of spice, make a beeline for 55 Bombay Street. Run by a mother-and-daughter duo, this stall serves Indian street food with heart. Rani, who was born in India, brings the warmth of home cooking and Ayurvedic herbs to every dish. I loved the humorous nod to their background on their stall — the painting of an Indian woman with a speech bubble reading, “My daughter can’t cook, who will marry her?”

Their vegetarian and vegan bites are bursting with flavour, but the stars of the show are the samosas and pani puri, which are arguably two of India’s most beloved street food classics. I tried the pani puri — hollow, crispy puff balls filled with black chickpeas, potatoes, and spicy water — a tasty snack on the go. There’s definitely a knack to eating them: move fast and pop them in whole before they collapse.

Copper Branch

Copper Branch brings a taste of Canada’s plant-based dining revolution to Rotterdam. This vegan chain has grown rapidly across Europe, sharing its mission of serving clean, green, fast superfood that appeals to diners of all dietary persuasions, not just vegans.

Copper Branch’s vegan food comes in the form of flavourful power bowls, Redefine Meat burger, falafel wraps, and energy-boosting smoothies. I tried the Pulled Chicken Wrap, and the flavourful explosion was all the proof I needed that quick food can be both satisfying and wholesome too.

Beyond healthy cuisine, Copper Branch walks the talk on ethics and sustainability. They actively support causes like Rainforest Trust, The Ocean Cleanup, United World Schools, and Peerdegaerdt Sanctuary, showing real commitment to community, animal welfare, and the planet. Copper Branch is fast-food with a clear conscience.

Backstage Vegan Kitchen

Rotown may be famous for its rock ’n’ roll gigs and late-night energy, but it’s also home to a surprising culinary gem called Backstage Vegan Kitchen. What started as a simple snack bar has evolved into a plant-based restaurant that’s winning over concertgoers as well as those in the know!

Forget greasy gig food, Backstage Vegan Kitchen offers plant-based versions of favourites like kapsalon, pitta doner, loaded burgers, and crispy “chicken,” all served in bountiful portions. And if you’ve got room, the golden waffles with lashings of caramel sauce and cream are a must. It’s unfussy and totally hits the right note.

Have you joined a vegan food tour? I enjoyed a vegan food tour in Rotterdam that packed a lot into just 3.5 hours, giving me the chance to sample many of the city’s best plant-based cafés and restaurants.

Responsible Dining in Rotterdam

The U Bar

I only ate breakfast here while staying at The Usual Hotel, where sustainability is the foundation. I was genuinely impressed by how transparent they are in their Impact Report, proving they’ve truly earned their Gold Green Key certification. From donating water and sponsoring a regenerative urban farm plot to using circular building materials, installing green roofs, and running on 100% renewable Dutch wind energy. Everything is done with purpose.

On the food side, 90% of the menu is vegetarian, and 70% of ingredients are sourced within 80 km of Rotterdam. They’re proud of their suppliers, and it shows. Breakfast featured organic cheese, overnight oats, coconut yoghurt, FairChain coffee, wild-grown teas, and heavenly pastries from Jordy’s Bakery. And their shakshuka is easily on par with versions I’ve had in Ethiopia.

Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, The U Bar is genuinely a chilled place to hang out with friends (and solo), or pitch up with your laptop. They have a fabulous lunch and evening menu featuring creative, locally sourced dishes like pearl barley risotto and vegan hot dog. This is one comfortably conscious cafe in Rotterdam that you will just love!

Old Scuola

Old Scuola began as a food truck run by Dutch entrepreneurs Daniel and Marco, before growing into a much-loved restaurant, and now with three locations across Rotterdam. Their mission is to create the ultimate pizza using handmade wood-fired ovens from Naples and top-quality, locally sourced ingredients like mushrooms from Rotterzwam, and make their own mozzarella. They even serve a great selection of organic wines and craft beers from independent breweries.

I visited Old Scuola West, which has a modern setting, a friendly atmosphere and plenty of meat-free options. I went for the Funghi pizza with burrata — its pillow-soft sourdough base, creamy texture, and earthy flavours were spot-on. Every table was full, the place buzzing with chatter, so definitely book ahead. These guys have truly nailed it — Old Scuola is the go-to spot for pizza in Rotterdam.

Brasserie De Eenling

This isn’t exactly in Rotterdam Centrum, but just one train stop away you’ll find Brasserie De Eenling, a charming French-inspired bistro on Schiedam’s Grote Markt. Opened by chef Marnix Benschop in 2019, it’s the kind of place where seasonal creativity and sustainable thinking go hand in hand. Supporting local suppliers is central to De Eenling’s ethos, from quince grown on a volunteer-run farm to organic wines from small producers and herbs cultivated in-house.

I went for the vegetarian tasting menu, a masterclass in flavour and finesse. Highlights included Jerusalem artichoke with garden herbs, pumpkin ravioli in chanterelle cream, and braised onions with hispi cabbage and truffle. It’s refined without being fussy, and the atmosphere is anything but stuffy. The profiterole with caramel sauce takes sweet and salty to a whole other level, and surely, this is good reason alone to visit.

Eco-Conscious Markets in Rotterdam

I know these aren’t restaurants, but Rotterdam’s eco-conscious markets deserve a mention. They’re some of the best places to grab a bite on the go or stock up on local, sustainable ingredients if you’re staying in a self-catering apartment (or home if you are lucky to live in Rotterdam) — and a great way to eat well while supporting local growers and makers.

Rotterdamse Oogstmarkt

Every Saturday, Rotterdamse Oogstmarkt transforms Noordplein into a gastronomic showcase of local flavours and community spirit. Farmers, bakers, and artisans from across the region set up stalls overflowing with quality seasonal produce, selling everything from pumpkins and wild mushrooms to juicy tomatoes and fresh flowers.

Founded by Gerda Zijlstra, the market grew from her vision to reconnect farmers and small producers with the people who eat their food. Here, visitors can meet the makers, learn about where their food comes from, and understand how it’s produced. What began as a series of pop-up festivals has evolved into a beloved weekly event that brings together sellers and buyers in a space for connection and cultural exchange.

Rotterdamse Oogstmarkt captures the city’s multicultural identity with stalls that stretch far beyond traditional Dutch fare. You can snag homemade Indian chutneys, Turkish börek, handmade pasta, vegan pastries and even seaweed paste. It’s a diverse mix that makes browsing a big adventure.

Veggie Garden Supermarket

This store has Taiwanese roots and the family truly lives by its personal values by offering a plant-based and cruelty-free selection. This makes them the best people to find vegan staples, organic snacks, eco-friendly products, and even some some rare imports you might not find elsewhere.

I tried a tasty yet crispy seitan snack there, but the game-changer was their vegan cheese — it was unlike any other I have tried before, it truly impressed. If you are looking to stock up on plant-based groceries during your Rotterdam trip, Veggie Garden Supermarket is the place.
